what?
I think the level of threat of AI is an interesting topic and is being covered by many journalists and AI leaders like Ezra Klein and his Interview with Anthropic's Dario Amodei as a classic example. Obviously we have not yet reached dreaded ASL4 with threatening levels of AI Autonomy and Persuasion, but many worry we will get there quickly. I think the doomsayers need to take a step back and consider the the threat we have all lived with for the past century in the form of nuclear holocaust and now ecological collapse. Certainly we are not on a good trajectory as species and as a planet but directing our energies on the specific threats will not get us anywhere unless we see them in the context of the overarching threat our species presents and why that is the case. These are the main issues we need to address. Why as an intelligent species can we not seem to understand ourselves and act together and appropriately move to evade these threats. If we do develop a potent AI that will actually allow us another trusted viewpoint to look at our species honestly and accurately it may actually solve the very issues we accuse AI of now reigning upon us.
